Some tests in this panel may exhibit interference when sample is collected from a person who is consuming a supplement with a high dose of biotin (also termed as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H or coenzyme R). Patient should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample. Folate assays of samples from patients receiving therapy with certain pharmaceuticals (eg, methotrexate or leucovorin), are contraindicated because of the cross-reactivity of folate binding protein with these compounds.

Patient should fast for 12 hours preceding collection of specimen. Fasting is defined as no consumption of food or beverage other than water for at least 12 hours before testing. Patient should not be on any intravenous infusion that would affect the acid-base balance. Patient should be in a fasting and resting state (should not exercise). Discuss discontinuing drugs causing increased uric acid concentration include diurectics, pyrazinamide, ethambutol, and nicotinic acid with your primary care physician before testing.

Description:
Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) is an enzyme produced by the liver. The AST test is commonly used to determine liver damage.

Description:
