HDL Cholesterol Subclasses

Description:
This test measures the concentrations of 2 major high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol subclasses (HDL2 cholesterol and HDL3 cholesterol) and may be used in studying the correlation between HDL subclasses and certain diseases, especially coronary heart disease (CHD) risk.HDL is a heterogeneous group of particles that transports lipids, such as cholesterol and triglycerides. Based on hydrated densities, HDL can be divided into HDL2 (40% of total HDL) and HDL3 (60% of total HDL); HDL3 is smaller and denser. HDL2 and HDL3 differ in composition, functionality, and atherogenic or atheroprotective properties [1].HDL cholesterol level has been inversely related to the CHD risk, but simply increasing total HDL cholesterol levels could not reduce future cardiovascular events [1]. Therefore, the atheroprotective properties of HDL were assumed to be rooted in the functionality of different HDL particles instead of total HDL cholesterol concentration. The value of HDL subgroup measurements for assessing CHD risk and various other conditions have been investigated, but whether HDL2 or HDL3 is the beneficial subfraction for CHD remains unclear [1].The results of this test should be interpreted in the context of pertinent clinical and family history and physical examination findings.Reference1. Heart Health Risk Snapshot
|
$99
|
|
|
Description:
Heart health is about more than cholesterol alone. The Heart Health Risk Snapshot combines three useful perspectives: a lipid panel for cholesterol and triglycerides, HbA1c for your average blood sugar over the past few months, and hsCRP for low-grade inflammation associated with cardiovascular risk. Together, these results can help you understand where your numbers stand, establish a baseline, and have a more informed conversation with your doctor. This panel is a starting point—not a diagnosis or complete calculation of heart-disease risk. Blood pressure, age, family history, smoking, and other health factors also matter.
Patient Instructions:
You should fast for 12-14 hours before collection of the specimen. Fasting is defined as no consumption of food or beverage other than water for at least 12-14 hours before testing.
Estimated turnaround for results is 3 business days. If confirmation testing is required, the estimated time may be extended.

Description:
This allergen-specific IgE antibody test quantifies an individual’s IgE response to Helminthosporium halodes. It is an in vitro quantitative assay that is intended to be used in conjunction with other clinical information to aid in the diagnosis of allergic diseases [1]. While allergen-specific serum IgE testing is considered comparable to skin testing in many instances, both the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology and the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology recognize that allergen-specific serum IgE testing may be preferred in some clinical situations. These include 1) the presence of widespread skin disease, 2) the recent use of antihistamines or other medications that can affect the results of allergy skin tests, 3) uncooperative patients, and 4) medical history suggesting that allergen skin testing would pose a significant risk for a serious allergic reaction [1]. A definitive clinical diagnosis of allergy should not be based on the results of any single diagnostic method, but should be made by a trained healthcare provider after all clinical and laboratory findings have been evaluated. More specific information about this allergen can be found at http://www.phadia.com/en/products/allergy-testing-products/immunocap-allergen-information/molds-and-other-microorganisms/allergens/setomelanomma-rostratahelminthosporium-halodes/ Reference 1. Description:
This panel helps diagnose heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) in individuals exposed to unfractionated heparin (UFH). The diagnosis of HIT is based on clinical criteria, but serological confirmation is often necessary [1]. HIT is a severe immune reaction to heparin therapy and is associated with high risk of venous and arterial thrombosis, making diagnosis and management critical for patient care. HIT is suspected when platelet counts decrease within 1 to 10 days after initiation of the treatment. Certain patient populations are known to have high risk of developing HIT from heparin-based therapy, such as those receiving UFH therapy after surgery (1%-5% incidence of HIT) [2,3]. The American Society of Hematology (ASH) suggests screening for HIT by monitoring platelet counts in patients undergoing heparin therapy for whom risk of HIT is considered intermediate or high [2]. Patients with decreased platelet count have increased probability of HIT, in which case further assessment is recommended to obtain a 4Ts clinical prediction score [2]. For patients with an intermediate or high 4Ts score, ASH recommends an immunoassay to detect the presence of HIT antibodies [2]. If the immunoassay results are positive, ASH suggests a functional assay, such as a serotonin release assay, to assess heparin-induced platelet activation and further confirm a HIT diagnosis [3]. Quest Diagnostics offers an immunoassay to detect heparin-induced platelet antibodies (HeparinInduced Platelet Antibody) and a serotonin release assay (Serotonin Release Assay [SRA], Unfractionated Heparin) to confirm a HIT diagnosis in patients exposed to UFH. These 2 tests may be ordered individually, together as this panel, or as a reflex test (Heparin-Induced Platelet Antibody with Reflex to SRA, Unfractionated Heparin). Test selection is based on the healthcare provider's needs and institutional capabilities. The results of this test should be interpreted in the context of pertinent clinical and family history and physical examination findings. References 1. Higgins RA, et al. Description:
This panel may be helpful in assessing liver injury, diagnosing liver diseases, and monitoring treatment of liver diseases and adverse effects of hepatotoxic drugs [1]. This panel includes total protein, albumin, globulin (calculated), albumin/globulin ratio, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin (calculated), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT).ALT, AST, ALP, and bilirubin are common liver chemistry analytes that can be used to evaluate liver injury. ALT is a more liver-specific marker than AST. The latter also is present in the peripheral circulation during episodes of skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle injury. Elevated ALT and AST levels disproportionate to ALP levels indicate hepatocellular injury; elevated ALP and bilirubin levels disproportionate to ALT and AST levels indicate cholestatic injury. In the absence of identifiable risk factors, ALT or AST levels above the upper limit of the normal range are associated with increased liver-related mortality [1]. Evaluation of direct and indirect bilirubin levels is helpful for assessing the possibility of hepatocellular disease [1]. Elevated direct bilirubin levels imply hepatocellular dysfunction or cholestasis.Albumin is a marker of liver synthetic function; low levels may indicate liver disease of more than 3 weeks' duration [1]. Total protein levels reflect the sum of albumin and globulins and may aid in the diagnosis of disorders involving the liver, kidney, or bone marrow. This panel may be useful in evaluating individuals who are taking hepatotoxic drugs as well as those with viral hepatitis, symptoms or signs of chronic liver disease, conditions associated with a high risk of developing liver disease, lifestyle risk factors for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or a family history of liver disease [2].Because many liver diseases cause characteristic abnormalities in selected liver chemistry analytes, results of individual analytes in this panel may aid in differential diagnosis. An abnormal test result may need to be confirmed by repeat testing and/or performing a clarifying test. For example, measurement of gamma-glutamyl transferase activity (not included in this panel) can help determine whether an elevated ALP result reflects hepatic disease [1].Note that liver enzymes are markers of liver injury, not direct measurements of hepatic function. Bilirubin, albumin, and prothrombin time are markers of liver synthetic function [1,2].The results of this test should be interpreted in the context of pertinent clinical and family history and physical examination findings.References1. Description:
Hepatitis B is a liver disease that is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Hepatitis B is a bloodborne pathogen and exposure to the blood of an infected person may result in infection.
This assay does not distinguish between Total B core antibody IgG and IgM detected before or at the onset of symptoms; however, such reactivity can persist for years after illness, and may even outlast anti-HBs. Occasionally Hepatitis B core antibody may be the only marker of either current or past Hepatitis B infection.
Abnormal results may require further evaluation by your physician.
Includes:
Hepatitis B Core Antibody, Total

Description:
This assay detects presence of both IgG and IgM antibodies to the hepatitis B core (anti-HBc) antigen. If positive, it reflexes to further detect only the presence of IgM anti-HBc. When both the total anti-HBc and IgM anti-HBc are positive, it is indicative of acute HBV infection. A positive total anti-HBc with negative IgM anti-HBc is indicative of either acute or past Hepatitis B infection. Total anti-HBc may be the only HBV marker detected in past infection. Anti-HBc antibodies, both total and IgM, are absent from HBV vaccinated people.
