Description:
This test quantifies an individual’s IgE response to melaleuca. It is an in vitro quantitative assay, which is intended to be used in conjunction with other clinical information to aid in the diagnosis of allergic diseases [1]. While allergen-specific serum IgE testing is considered comparable to skin testing in many instances, both the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology and the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology recognize that allergen-specific serum IgE testing may be preferred in some clinical situations. These include 1) the presence of widespread skin disease, 2) the recent use of antihistamines or other medications that can affect the results of allergy skin tests, 3) uncooperative patients, and 4) medical history suggesting that allergen skin testing would pose a significant risk for a serious allergic reaction [1]. A definitive clinical diagnosis of allergy should not be based on the results of any single diagnostic method, but should be made by a trained healthcare professional after all clinical and laboratory findings have been evaluated. More specific information about this allergen can be found at http://www.phadia.com/en/products/allergy-testing-products/immunocap-allergen-information/tree-pollens/allergens/melaleuca-cajeput-tree/ Reference 1. Description:
This FDA-cleared real-time PCR assay on the cobas 4800 platform assesses for mutations at codon 600 of BRAF, particularly V600E, which are present in 40-60% of melanomas. Melanomas with codon 600 BRAF mutations are associated with response to the BRAF-directed kinase inhibitor vemurafenib (ZELBORAF®). Tumor DNA is extracted from fixed tumor tissue and subjected to real-time PCR, with approximate sensitivity of 5% mutation-bearing cells in a mixed sample. Other codon 600 BRAF mutations, beside the most common V600E (c.1799T>A) may not be detected by this method.

Menorrhagia Screen without Consultation

Description:
This panel may be used to screen for bleeding disorders in patients with abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB; formerly called menorrhagia). It includes initial laboratory evaluation of the 2 most common bleeding disorders affecting women: von Willebrand disease (VWD) and coagulation factor XI deficiency [1].AUB is classified into 9 categories based on cause per the PALM-COEIN system: polyp, adenomyosis, leiomyoma, malignancy and hyperplasia, coagulopathy, ovulatory dysfunction, endometrial disorders, latrogenic, and not otherwise classified [2]. The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) recommends using systems for nomenclature and symptoms (System 1) and for classification of potential causes of AUB in the reproductive years (System 2) to guide clinical investigation of AUB [2].Screening for coagulopathy in patients with AUB starts with a structured history. Specific coagulopathy tests and consultation with a hematologist are appropriate in patients with a relevant history [2]. Testing for VWF antigen, ristocetin cofactor, and factor VIII activity is recommended for initial diagnosis of VWD [3]. Additional tests may be needed to determine VWD subtypes. A factor XI activity test can identify a congenital factor XI deficiency; when an inhibitor pattern is observed, this test may help identify an acquired factor XI inhibitor. Factor XI specific inhibitors may be quantitated using a Bethesda assay (test code 17854).The results of this test should be interpreted in the context of pertinent clinical and family history and physical examination findings.References1. This test quantifies an individual's IgE response to mesquite tree. Allergen-specific serum IgE testing is considered comparable to skin testing and may be preferred in some clinical situations. However, a positive test result only indicates that a patient is sensitized to the allergen of concern. Many IgE-sensitized individuals do not develop any symptoms when exposed to the allergen. A diagnosis of allergy should only be made by a trained medical provider after conducting a thorough clinical evaluation [1].More specific information about this allergen can be found on the following website: https://www.thermofisher.com/phadia/us/en/resources/allergen-encyclopedia.htmlReference1. Description:
The iron in Hemoglobin is normally maintained in the ferrous state by several effective mechanisms so that only a small percentage of the total hemoglobin is in the form of Methemoglobin. The production of Methemoglobin by oxidation of the iron to the ferric state, renders the hemoglobin incapable of interacting reversibly with molecular oxygen. The oxygen affinity of the unaffected heme is also increased, resulting in the decreased release of oxygen to the tissues at low partial pressure of oxygen.Methemoglobinemia is usually caused by exposure to various chemical agents, many which contain nitrogen. An increase in Methemoglobin can also occur due to Methemoglobin Reductase Deficiency (Congenital Methemoglobinemia).

Description:
MRSA is a major cause of nosocomial and life threatening infections. Infections with MRSA have been associated with a significantly high morbidity, mortality and cost. Selection of these organisms has been greatest in the healthcare setting. However, MRSA has also become more prevalent in the community. To control the transmission of MRSA, the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) has recommended guidelines, which include an active surveillance to identify potential reservoirs and a rigorous infection control program to control the spread of MRSA. Rapid, accurate, and cost-effective screening tests for MRSA colonization are needed in order to reduce the economic burden of this pathogen. The MRSA Culture Screen test detects colonization with Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in patients and can be used as a tool in infection prevention and control efforts. Early detection of this pathogen can accelerate the isolation process, thus minimizing the spread of infections.
