Description:
The most important application of AFP testing in cancer management is for testicular cancer. Elevation of serum AFP above values found in healthy individuals occurs in several malignant diseases, most notably nonseminomatous testicular cancer and primary hepatocellular carcinoma. AFP is not recommended as a screening procedure to detect cancer in the general population.

Description:
This in vitro allergen-specific IgE panel is used to quantitatively measure an individual's IgE response to alpha-gal, an allergy component, and 3 meats (beef, pork, and lamb) that commonly trigger alpha-gal-associated meat allergy. This IgE panel may be used in conjunction with other clinical information to aid in the diagnosis of alpha-gal syndrome, a severe allergic reaction to mammalian meat induced by past tick bites [1].Most cases of alpha-gal syndrome occur in the southeastern United States because of the heavy presence of the lone star ticks. Other types of ticks also have been associated with alpha-gal syndrome in Europe, Australia, Asia, and the northern and western United States. The alpha-gal (ie. galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose) IgE test helps evaluate the etiology of meat allergies in patients with delayed onset of symptoms (3 to 6 hours after eating meat) [1,2]. IgE antibodies to alpha-gal are the likely mediator of anaphylactic reactions in individuals who develop hypersensitivities to beef, pork and/or lamb as adults [2].The results of this panel should be interpreted in the context of pertinent clinical and family history and physical examination findings. More specific information about each allergen included in this panel can be found on the Quest Diagnostics Directory Page. References1. Alpha-gal syndrome. Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Alpha-Globin Common Mutation Analysis

Description:
Alpha thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder characterized by a reduced or absent production of alpha globin. The majority of people who have alpha thalassemia trait or disease will have deletions of any number of the 4 alpha globin genes. This test identifies the 7 most common deletions in the alpha globin genes. The vast majority of individuals who have an alpha globin deletion (or deletions) will be identified with this test. It is the recommended first tier genetic test for confirmation of suspected alpha thalassemia or alpha thalassemia trait. This would include couples who are pregnant or anticipating pregnancy and who have been identified as at risk via an abnormal hemoglobinopathy evaluation (CBC and HPLC).In the event of an alpha globin variant identified on HPLC, the recommended first tier test would be alpha globin gene sequencing.

Description:
This test can be used to detect the presence or absence of large deletions in the HBA1 or HBA2 gene in patients or their family members suspected of having alpha-Thalassemia or who are carriers of alpha globin deletions. The assay can also be used in the prenatal diagnosis of alpha-Thalassemia. The assay does not determine the type or breakpoint of the rearrangement. This assay can be used instead of Southern Blot analysis to determine the total number of intact alpha globin genes.

A smaller percentage will have small deletions/duplications or missense variants. This test identifies non-deletional variants in the alpha globin genes. It is the recommended first-tier test only if an alpha globin variant is identified on hemoglobin HPLC. It can also be used as a second-tier test for an individual for whom deletion testing is negative or doesn't completely explain the patient's clinical picture.

Description:
Amylase is a digestive enzyme produced by the pancreas and salivary gland. Elevated amylase levels can be indicative of pancreatitis. The most common cause of elevation of serum amylase is inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). In acute pancreatitis, serum amylase begins to rise within 6-24 hours, remains elevated for a few days and returns to normal in 3-7 days. Other causes of elevated serum amylase are inflammation of salivary glands (mumps), biliary tract disease and bowel obstruction. Elevated serum amylase can also be seen with drugs (e.g., morphine)ย which constrict the pancreatic duct sphincter preventing excretion of amylase into the intestine.
A significant deviation from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.

ANA, IFA, Cascade and Rheumatoid Arthritis Panel 2, with Reflexes

Description:
This test can be helpful in the diagnosis of autoimmune rheumatic diseases. Specimens with positive results for antinuclear antibodies (ANA) by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) are subsequently tested for a series of ANA-specific autoantibodies in cascade tiers. The first tier focuses on autoantibodies associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and mixed connective tissue disease; the second tier detects autoantibodies seen in Sjogren syndrome, systemic sclerosis and polymyositis; and the third tier includes markers of the limited form of systemic sclerosis and neuropsychiatric SLE. This screen also includes the following markers of rheumatoid arthritis: rheumatoid factor, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody and anti-mutated citrullinated vimentin antibody.Note that the cascade stops with the first tier in which a positive antibody result is observed. Therefore, even if an antibody included in a subsequent tier is present, it will not be reported with this test. If the ANA IFA result is positive but all the specific autoantibodies tested in the cascade antibody tests are negative, the patient may still have an autoimmune disease other than those typically associated with the antibodies tested.
