|
Description:
Vitamin A is critical for vision, growth, and many cell functions. High concentrations of Vitamin A are seen with renal failure, but this is not associated with toxicity and excessive ingestion. High concentrations are associated with bone fractures. Low concentrations of Vitamin A are consistent with fat malabsorption and are rarely due to inadequate diet.
Vitamin A is needed for growth and for strong bones and teeth. As you grow older, it helps keep your skin and eyes healthy. Vitamin A is present in liver, fish liver oils, dairy products, dark green and yellow-orange vegetables, and in fruits. Too much vitamin A may cause symptoms that include headache, itchy skin, and hair loss.
A significant deviation from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
Includes:
Vitamin A
Patient Instructions:
Overnight fasting is required. Fasting is defined as no consumption of food or beverage other than water for at least 8 hours before testing.

|
Description:
The Vitamin B12 test is used to aid in the diagnosis of anemia, determine overall nutritional health and screen for folate deficiency.
Folic acid deficiency is common in pregnant women, alcoholics, patients with diets that do not include raw fruits and vegetables, and people with structural damage to the small intestine. The most reliable and direct method of diagnosing folate deficiency is the determination of folate levels in both erythrocytes and serum. Low folic acid levels, however, can also be the result of a primary Vitamin B12 deficiency that decreases the ability of cells to take up folic acid. Vitamin B12 is decreased in pernicious anemia, total or partial gastrectomy, malabsorption and certain congenital biochemical disorders.
Significant deviations from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
Alternative Name(s):
Cobalamin, Vitamin B12/Folic Acid
Includes:
Folate; Vitamin B12.
Patient Instructions:
Some tests in this panel may exhibit interference when sample is collected from a person who is consuming a supplement with a high dose of biotin (also termed as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H or coenzyme R). Patient should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample.

Description:
Vitamin B3 - Nicotinic acid occurs naturally in plants and animals and is also added to many foods as a vitamin supplement.
Nicotinamide is a metabolite of nicotinic acid. Due to the large variability in the metabolism of nicotinic acid, plasma concentrations of this metabolite are variable. In one study, fasting plasma concentrations were reported to be approximately 40 ng/mL. In another study it was reported that the administration of a single 1000 mg of extended-release tablet of nicotinic acid resulted in a mean peak nicotinamide concentration of 400 ng/mL between 5 and 10 hours post dose, decreasing to about 100 ng/mL by 16 hours post dose.
Nicotinic Acid - Due to the large variability in the metabolism of nicotinic acid, the dosing preparation used (immediate-release vs. extended release), and the mg doses used, the serum concentrations may range from less than 20 ng/mL to about 30,000 ng/mL. After oral administration of an immediate-release tablet, peak plasma concentrations occur in 4 to 5 hours. The plasma half-life of nicotinic acid is about one hour. In one study, fasting plasma concentrations were reported to be less than 20 ng/mL. In another study, it was reported that the administration of a single 1000 mg extended-release tablet resulted in mean nicotinic acid concentrations of less than 50 ng/mL.
Significant deviations from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.

Vitamin/Nutrient Panel
|
$298
|
|
|
Description:
Our Vitamin/nutrient Panel offers an overview of important vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in the body to assess any potential deficiencies or imbalances. People usually think of both vitamins and minerals as just vitamins, but they have some differences and are equally vital for the body to function correctly. This panel will test vitamins B12 and Folates (also known as vitamin B9) which are useful to diagnose anemia, and vitamin D which is important for bone and hormonal health. Iron is an important mineral needed in red blood cells to carry oxygen properly, and along with ferritin (a measure of your body's iron reserves), it can help diagnose anemia as well. Magnesium and zinc are also minerals and are responsible for muscle function, energy production, immune function, and hormone regulation to mention a few. Methylmalonic acid is useful in understanding vitamin B12 deficiency and it aids in diagnosing certain genetic conditions. This test also includes a Comprehensive Metabolic Profile (CMP), which also includes kidney and liver function biomarkers, will allow you to assess your levels of electrolytes (also minerals) like calcium, potassium, chloride, and sodium. The CMP will also tell you your levels of total protein and glucose which are important nutrients used by the body to perform a multitude of metabolic functions.
Includes:
Complete Blood Count / CBC (includes Differential and Platelets): WBC, RBC, Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, Platelet Count, MPV and Differential (Absolute and Percent - Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Monocytes, Eosinophils, and Basophils) Comprehensive Metabolic Profile ( includes eGFR ): Albumin, Albumin/Globulin Ratio (calculated), Alkaline Phosphatase, ALT, AST, BUN/Creatinine Ratio (calculated), Calcium, Carbon Dioxide, Chloride, Creatinine with GFR Estimated, Globulin (calculated), Glucose, Potassium, Sodium, Total Bilirubin, Total Protein, Urea Nitrogen Vitamin B12 Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy Folate, RBC Iron, Serum Ferritin, Serum Magnesium, Serum Zinc Methylmalonic Acid
Patient Instructions:
You should fast for 12 hours before collection of the specimen. Fasting is defined as no consumption of food or beverage other than water for at least 12 hours before testing. Specimens should be collected in the morning since iron values decrease by 30% during the course of the day and there can be significant interference from lipemia. Some tests in this panel may exhibit interference when sample is collected from a person who is consuming a supplement with a high dose of biotin (also termed as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H or coenzyme R). In patients receiving therapy with high biotin doses (ie, > 5 mg/day), no sample should be taken until at least eight hours after the last biotin administration. Patient should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample. Patient should not have vitamins containing folic acid during the previous three to five days; if so, consult physician before discontinuing. Estimated turnaround for results is 5 business days. If confirmation testing is required, the estimated time may be extended.

VMA (Vanillylmandelic Acid), 24-Hour Urine with Creatinine

|
Description:
Urinary vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) concentration is useful in the biochemical diagnosis and monitoring of neuroblastomas [1].Neuroblastomas occur predominantly in children and are the most common malignancy in those under 1 year old. Neuroblastomas are catecholamine-metabolizing tumors with limited ability to store and secrete catecholamines. Thus, catecholamine metabolites-including VMA and homovanillic acid (HVA)-are more reliable than catecholamines as biochemical markers for neuroblastomas [1]. VMA and HVA levels, usually measured simultaneously, can be elevated in neuroblastomas as well as other catecholamine-secreting tumors, such as pheochromocytoma [1]. In patients with familial dysautonomia (Riley-Day syndrome), a neurological disorder found mainly in individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, VMA levels are generally elevated while HAV levels may be normal or decreased [2].Urinary VMA and HVA levels may have limited accuracy for diagnosis of neuroblastomas with high-risk metastatic biology [1]. Therefore, dopamine levels in urine or serum have been proposed as an additional marker for diagnosis and monitoring of neuroblastomas [3].The results of this test should be interpreted in the context of pertinent clinical and family history and physical examination findings.References1. Description:
Urinary vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) concentration is useful in the biochemical diagnosis and monitoring of neuroblastomas [1]. VMA measurement from random urine specimens, expressed as the ratio of VMA to creatinine, may provide equivalent diagnostic value as VMA measurement from 24-hour urine specimens for the evaluation of neuroblastomas [1].Neuroblastomas occur predominantly in children and are the most common malignancy under 1 year old. Description:
N-type calcium channel antibodies are more highly associated with primary lung cancer than P/Q-type. One or all of the autoantibodies in the myasthenia gravis (MG)/LEMS evaluation can occur with neoplasia without evidence of neurological impairment. One or both calcium channel antibodies (P/Q and N) can occur with paraneoplastic and idiopathic cerebellar ataxia, encephalomyeloneuropathies, and autonomic neuropathy. Classical symptoms of LEMS include proximal muscle weakness, fatigability, dry mouth and impotence. When presentation is further complicated with oculobulbar weakness, these symptoms can easily be misinterpreted as MG. However, because VGCC antibodies are positive in only approximately 5% of MG patients, the measurement of these antibodies is very useful in distinguishing LEMS from MG.

Description:
Limbic encephalitis (LE) is a paraneoplastic neurological syndrome often associated with small cell lung carcinoma and more rarely with testicular, breast, and other tumors. Clinical hallmarks of paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis are changing mental status, short-term memory impairment, seizures, confusion, and behavioral changes. Hu antibody-negative LE patients usually do not develop symptoms beyond the limbic system and appear to improve more often after treatment of the cancer than those who have Hu antibodies, suggesting that the pathogenesis of the LE in both groups could be different. Recent studies have detected antibodies to voltage-gated potassium channels (VGKC) in patients with LE, with and without associated tumors. Neurological symptoms were found to improve with a reduction of VGKC antibody levels.

Description:
This test may be used to help diagnose von Willebrand disease (VWD) and categorize disease subtype.von Willebrand factor (VWF) is a blood coagulation protein that has 2 functions: (1) mediating platelet adhesion to the injured endothelium and (2) acting as a protective carrier protein for coagulation factor VIII. Deficiency of VWF causes VWD, the most common inherited bleeding disorder that affects approximately 1 in 1,000 individuals at the primary care level [1]. VWD is classified into type 1 (quantitative deficiency of VWF), type 2 (qualitative deficiency of VWF), and type 3 (total absence of VWF). Different types of VWD are further categorized into subtypes, identification of which is important to inform prognosis and treatment decisions.Three tests are recommended for initial diagnosis of VWD [2]: VWF antigen, platelet-dependent VWF activity (eg, ristocetin cofactor), and factor VIII activity. Additional tests may be needed to further identify the subtype of VWD. VWF multimer analysis and collagen binding activity are included in this panel and are useful to discriminate between VWD subtype 2A/2B from 2M and rare forms of 2M [1].Test results of acquired von Willebrand syndrome (AVWS) may be similar to those of congenital VWD [1, 2]. However, patients with AVWS do not have a family history of bleeding or a personal life-long history of bleeding. Conditions associated with AVWS include lymphoproliferative disorders, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, Wilms tumor expressing GPIb, myeloproliferative disorders, aortic stenosis, ventricular assist devices, and hypothyroidism. The results of this test should be interpreted in the context of pertinent clinical and family history and physical examination findings.References1. Description:
This panel may be used to help diagnose von Willebrand disease (VWD) and categorize disease subtype.von Willebrand factor (VWF) is a blood coagulation protein that has 2 functions: (1) mediating platelet adhesion to the injured endothelium and (2) acting as a protective carrier protein for coagulation factor VIII. VWF multimer analysis is also included in this panel and is useful for discriminating between VWD type 2M from 2A/2B and platelet-type VWD [1].Test results of acquired von Willebrand syndrome (AVWS) may be similar to those of congenital VWD [1, 2].
The Collagen Binding Activity is a surrogate assay for the measurement of von Willebrand Factor (VWF) mediated Platelet adhesion. Decreased activity (collagen bound to the A3 domain of the VWF protein) relative to the VWF antigen level, is observed with qualitative defects of VWF (type 2 disorders). The CBA assay may assist in the discrimination of type 2 disorders. In addition, there have been reports of isolated defects of CBA as a cause for a variant form of von Willebrand disease.

von Willebrand Factor GPIbM Activity

Description:
Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is the most frequent inherited bleeding disorder and is characterized by either a quantitative or qualitative defect of von Willebrand Factor (VWF). During primary hemostasis, VWF mediates platelet adhesion and aggregation via binding to the platelet glycoprotein Ib (GPIB) receptor at the site of injury. VWF is also the specific carrier protein of Factor VIII, protecting FVIII from proteolytic degradation in circulation. The initial screening evaluation of VWD includes testing for VWF antigen, VWF activity, and Factor VIII activity. Historically, the most commonly performed VWF activity assay has been the Ristocetin Cofactor assay (VWF:RCo). The GPIbM activity assay is a ristocetin independent activity assay and provides several advantages over the VWF:RCo assay - improved sensitivity (eg. lower reporting limit) and precision, and insensitivity to benign VWF variants (seen in 60-70% and 15-20% of African and Caucasian descent, respectively) that reduce ristocetin interaction and potentially leading to a potentially false diagnosis of VWD or type 2 VWD (VWD associated with markedly decreased VWF activity compared to VWF antigen level). It should be noted that reference intervals are from non-ABO typed donors.

Description:
This test quantifies an individual's IgE response to wall pellitory (Parietaria officinalis). Allergen-specific serum IgE testing is considered comparable to skin testing and may be preferred in some clinical situations. However, a positive test result only indicates that a patient is sensitized to the allergen of concern. Many IgE-sensitized individuals do not develop any symptoms when exposed to the allergen. A diagnosis of allergy should only be made by a trained medical provider after conducting a thorough clinical evaluation [1].More specific information about this allergen can be found on the following website: https://www.thermofisher.com/phadia/us/en/resources/allergen-encyclopedia.htmlReference 1.
