Apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1) Renal Risk Variant Genotyping
*Build Your Own Panel Eligible [?]

$1957
|
|
|
Description:
Two apolipoprotein L1 gene (APOL1) risk variants (referred to as G1 and G2), found predominantly in African Americans, markedly increase an individual's risk for kidney disease. The presence of two APOL1 high risk alleles (G1/G1, G2/G2, G1/G2 genotypes) confirm that the patient is at increased risk for developing focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, HIV-associated nephropathy, and hypertension attributed end-stage renal disease. Clinical studies suggest that transplanted kidneys from deceased donors with two APOL1 risk alleles have shorter graft survival than donor kidneys with zero or one APOL1 risk alleles (G0/G0, G0/G1, G0/G2 genotypes). The risk of the two APOL1 high risk alleles (G1/G1, G2/G2, G1/G2) in living kidney donors remains unknown at this time. This new test for renal transplant evaluation can serve as a companion test for the nephrology genetic panel for potential donors from the African American population. If clinically indicated, potential donors and/or recipients of all ethnic groups can also be tested with our nephrology genetics panel(s) to screen for a long list of nephrology genetic diseases. With better access to genetic information, physicians will be able to help guide donors and recipients in decisions regarding transplantation.

NMO (neuromyelitis optica, Devic disease) is an immune- mediated chronic inflammatory disease that predominantly affects the optic nerve and spinal cord and presents with optic neuritis (ON) and myelitis. Limited forms of this disease, such as isolated ON, brainstem encephalitis and longitudinal extensive transverses myelitis (LETM), have been referred to as NMO spectrum disorders (NMOSD). NMO was originally thought to be a variant of multiple sclerosis, but is now recognized as a distinct disease. The presence of serum antibodies against aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is associated with NMO and NMOSD.

|
Description:
This test is an allergen-specific IgE antibody test that quantifies an individual’s IgE response to Arizona cypress. It is an in vitro quantitative assay, which is intended to be used in conjunction with other clinical information to aid in the diagnosis of allergic diseases [1].
While allergen-specific serum IgE testing is considered comparable to skin testing in many instances, both the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology and the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology recognize that allergen-specific serum IgE testing may be preferred in some clinical situations. These include 1) the presence of widespread skin disease, 2) the recent use of antihistamines or other medications that can affect the results of allergy skin tests, 3) uncooperative patients, and 4) medical history suggesting that allergen skin testing would pose a significant risk for a serious allergic reaction [1].
A definitive clinical diagnosis of allergy should not be based on the results of any single diagnostic method, but should be made by a trained healthcare professional after all clinical and laboratory findings have been evaluated.
More specific information about this allergen can be found at https://www.thermofisher.com/phadia/wo/en/resources/allergen-encyclopedia/whole-allergens.html?key=t222

Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST/SGOT)
*Build Your Own Panel Eligible [?]

Description:
Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) is an enzyme produced by the liver. The AST test is commonly used to determine liver damage.
AST is widely distributed throughout the tissues with significant amounts being in the heart and liver. Lesser amounts are found in skeletal muscles, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, lungs, and brain. Injury to these tissues results in the release of the AST enzyme to general circulation. In myocardial infarction, serum AST may begin to rise within 6-8 hours after onset, peak within two days and return to normal by the fourth or fifth day post infarction. An increase in serum AST is also found with hepatitis, liver necrosis, cirrhosis, and liver metastasis.
Significant deviations from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
Includes:
Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST/SGOT)
****Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST/SGOT) is included in the Comprehensive Metabolic Profile (CMP), and in the Liver Function Profile.****
