Description:
Estradiol, Estrone and Estriol are the three forms of the hormone estrogen. The Estradiol test is usually ordered to measure estrogen levels in females who experience abnormal menstrual cycles, abnormal bleeding and fertility issues. Estriol is the predominate estrogen present in the third trimester of pregnancy. Estrone (the third in the triad of female estrogens is calculated by subtracting estradiol and estriol from total estrogens) is often ordered to evaluate postmenopausal vaginal bleeding due to peripheral conversion of androgenic steroids. Increased estrone levels may be associated with increased levels of circulating androgens and their subsequent peripheral conversion.
A significant deviation from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.

If using a testosterone cream please be sure you have not rubbed any into the antecubital area of your arm for the last 24 hours as it can give elevated results. Assay is not recommended when patient is receiving prednisone/prednisolone therapy due to cross reactivity with the antibody used in this assay. Patient should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample.
Estimated turnaround for results is 10 business days. If confirmation testing is required, the estimated time may be extended.

Description:
Free T4 by equilibrium dialysis is the most accurate measure of Free T4. Results are independent of the concentration of the T4-binding proteins, the presence of molecular variants of these proteins, or circulating autoantibodies. Free T4 is useful in distinguishing euthyroidism from thyroid disease. Thyroxine (T4) is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland. A test of the amount of T4 in the blood is a way to see how well the thyroid gland is working.
A significant deviation from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.

Description:
Estradiol is a form of the hormone estrogen. The Estradiol test is usually ordered to measure estrogen levels in females who experience abnormal menstrual cycles, abnormal bleeding and fertility issues.
Measuring the circulating levels of estradiol is important for assessing the ovarian function and monitoring follicular development for assisted reproduction protocols. Estradiol plays an essential role throughout the human menstrual cycle. Elevated estradiol levels in females may also result from primary or secondary ovarian hyperfunction. Very high estradiol levels are found during the induction of ovulation for assisted reproduction therapy or in pregnancy. Decreased estradiol levels in females may result from either lack of ovarian synthesis (primary ovarian hypofunction and menopause) or a lesion in the hypothalamus-pituitary axis (secondary ovarian hypofunction). Elevated estradiol levels in males may be due to increased aromatization of androgens, resulting in gynecomastia. In men testosterone levels decrease while their estrogen levels increase as they age. High estrogen levels in men contribute to prostate cancer, heart disease, loss of muscle mass, fatigue, low libido, erectile dysfunction.
A significant deviation from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
Includes:
Estradiol, serum.

Calcium, Ionized, Serum

Description:
The ionized calcium is determined by an ion selective electrode methodology. The result that is generated is pH adjusted. The result is empirically based on a measured pH and ionized calcium concentration normalized to a pH of 7.40. This calculation compensates for in vitro changes in pH due to loss of CO2 through specimen handling. Ionized calcium represents the true "bioavailable" calcium in the circulation. In situations where the total calcium is normal but does not fit the clinical picture, e.g., hyperparathyroidism, a determination of the ionized calcium will, many times, show an elevation in the "bioavailable" calcium component. This may be due to alterations in protein concentrations, especially albumin, that binds most of the calcium in the circulation.
Significant deviations from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.

Description:
FSH/LH testing is used in the workup of infertility (for both men and women). Used also to investigate low sperm count, menstrual irregularities, pitutary disorders, diseases involving the testes or ovaries. May be used to determine the cause of early or delayed puberty. FSH and LH are secreted by the anterior pituitary in response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GNRH) secreted by the hypothalamus. In both males and females, FSH and LH secretion is regulated by a balance of positive and negative feedback mechanisms involving the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, the reproductive organs, and the pituitary and sex steroid hormones. FSH and LH play a critical role in maintaining the normal function of the male and female reproductive systems. Abnormal FSH levels with corresponding increased or decreased levels of LH, estrogens, progesterone, and testosterone are associated with a number of pathological conditions. Increased FSH levels are associated with menopause and primary ovarian hypofunction in females and primary hypogonadism in males. Decreased levels of FSH are associated with primary ovarian hyper-function in females and primary hypergonadism in males. Normal or decreased levels of FSH are associated with polycystic ovary disease in females. In males, LH is also called interstitial cell-stimulating hormone (ICSH). Abnormal LH levels with corresponding increased or decreased levels of FSH, estrogens, progesterone, and testosterone are associated with a number of pathological conditions. Increased LH levels are associated with menopause, primary ovarian hypofunction, and polycystic ovary disease in females and primary hypo-gonadism in males. Decreased LH levels are associated with primary ovarian hyperfunction in females and primary hyper-gonadism in males.

Description:
Cortisol is the major adrenal glucocorticoid steroid hormone, and is normally under feedback control by pituitary ACTH and the hypothalamus.
Causes of low cortisol include pituitary destruction or failure, with resultant loss of ACTH to stimulate the adrenal, and metabolic errors or destruction of the adrenal gland itself (adrenogenital syndromes, tuberculosis, histoplasmosis). The diagnosis of hypoadrenalism generally requires confirmation with ACTH stimulation, due to the circadian rhythms of cortisol and other factors. Causes of increased cortisol, which may present initially simply as loss of normal diurnal variation, include pituitary overproduction of ACTH, production of ACTH by a tumor (notably oat cell cancers), and adrenal adenomas.
A significant deviation from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
Includes:
Cortisol, AM
Patient Instructions:
Specimen should be collected between 7 AM and 9 AM. Assay is not recommended when patient is receiving prednisone/prednisolone therapy due to cross reactivity with the antibody used in this assay.

Description:
Testosterone circulates almost entirely bound to transport proteins: Normally less than 1-2% is free. The principal transport protein for testosterone is known as sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) or testosterone-estradiol binding globulin (TeBG). Testosterone measurements are used to assess erectile dysfunction, infertility, gynecomastia, and osteoporosis and to assess hormone replacement therapy.
This is a Male Only Testosterone test, it cannot be performed on a female. FEMALES needing to order this test from Quest will need to order the 'Testosterone Total LC/MS/MS'.
Use of synthetic steroids, various supplements and/or high doses of biotin may interfere with the accuracy of the standard immunoassay Testosterone Total serum test. If you are taking any of these it is recommended that you order the Testosterone Total LC/MS/MS for testing.
This testosterone test will also provide results when the total testosterone value is >1500 but <3,000.
This is a Male Only test, it cannot be ordered by females. If a female orders this panel, the testosterone test will not be included on the requisition or performed at the lab.
Significant deviations from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.

|
Description:
Use Diagnosis of parathyroid disease and other diseases of calcium homeostasis; monitoring patients undergoing renal dialysis Additional Information PTH is an 84 amino acid peptide hormone which is responsible for the regulation of serum calcium levels within a narrow range. PTH is secreted in response to decrease in serum calcium levels by increasing the renal reabsorption of calcium and lowering reabsorption of phosphorus. The measurement of PTH is a very useful tool in the differential diagnosis and management of hypercalcemia. PTH assays can be of help in the diagnosis of tumors and hyperplasia of the parathyroid gland, as well as in localizing hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue by assay of samples obtained via venous catheterization. The native or intact (1-84) PTH has a short half-life, measured in minutes, whereas the carboxy and midmolecule fragments, which are biologically inactive, have half-lives 10- to 20-fold higher. The high concentrations of biologically inactive fragments have interfered with use of C-terminal or midmolecule assays for evaluation of parathyroid function in patients with impaired renal function. Intact PTH assays provide a more accurate assessment of parathyroid patients including those with various renal diseases.
A significant deviation from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.

Description:
Progesterone is a hormone naturally secreted by the ovary during the menstrual cycle. The Progesterone Test is used to measure ovarian function and can determine if a woman has ovulated and when the ovulation occurred. Levels increase sharply during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. The level increases from 9 to 32 weeks of pregnancy.
In males, progesterone increases levels of testosterone in your body and enhances its effects. It also reduces estrogen and its effects.
A significant deviation from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.

Description:
IGF-1, also known as somatomedin-C, is a polypeptide hormone produced by the liver and other tissues in response to growth hormone release by the pituitary gland. IGF-1 effects growth promoting activity and glucose metabolism (insulin-like activity) in most human tissues. It is carried in blood bound to a carrier protein which prolongs its half-life; therefore making serum levels more constant than growth hormone while correlating with "average" circulating levels of growth hormone. In short, IGF-1 is a surrogate marker of growth hormone levels and activity.
Measuring IGF-I is useful in several growth-related disorders. Dwarfism caused by deficiency of growth hormone (hypopituitarism) results in decreased serum levels of IGF-I, while acromegaly (growth hormone excess) results in elevated levels of IGF-I. IGF-I measurements are also helpful in assessing nutritional status; levels are reduced in undernutrition and restored with a proper diet.
A significant deviation from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
