Sugar Check Panel with Insulin

Info
|
Description:
This profile measures the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. Sugar is an important source of energy, especially for the brain. The amount of glucose in your blood is carefully controlled by the endocrine (glandular) system. This system causes sugar to be stored or used for energy, depending on the needs of your body. In addition, the hemoglobin A1c ("A-one-C") test is a blood test used in the care of people who have diabetes. The hemoglobin A1c percentage is a way of looking at your average blood sugar control over the last 2 or 3 months. Finally, this profile includes a complete renal panel to assess kidney function, which is critical in evaluating overall health of diabetics as well as Insulin levels.
A significant deviation from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
Includes:
Comprehensive Metabolic Profile ( includes eGFR ): Albumin, Albumin/Globulin Ratio (calculated), Alkaline Phosphatase, ALT, AST, BUN/Creatinine Ratio (calculated), Calcium, Carbon Dioxide, Chloride, Creatinine with GFR Estimated, Globulin (calculated), Glucose, Potassium, Sodium, Total Bilirubin, Total Protein, Urea Nitrogen
Phosphate (as Phosphorus)
Hemoglobin (Hgb) A1c
Insulin, Fasting
Patient Instructions:
Patient should fast for 12 hours preceding collection of specimen. Fasting is defined as no consumption of food or beverage other than water for at least 12 hours before testing.
Estimated turnaround for results is 4 business days.

Description:
Antibodies to pancreatic exocrine cells (ExPA) have been suggested as a very specific Crohn's Disease (CD) serological marker. Clinical studies reported a prevalence of 30-50% in CD patients. In spite of the relatively low sensitivity, ExPA can detect a subpopulation of CD patients that are negative for other CD markers (ASCA IgG, ASCA IgA), thus being very useful in combination with other IBD tests.

Microalbumin, Random Urine with Creatinine

Description:
Measurement of albumin levels in urine below the detection level of urine dipsticks. This test is useful in the management of patients with relatively early diabetes mellitus to assist in avoiding or delaying the onset of diabetic renal disease.
Microalbumin is albumin excreted in the urine and is a sensitive marker of nephropathy. It is used to screen for early renal disease in diabetic patients.
Creatinine is the endproduct of creatine metabolism. Creatine is present primarily in muscle and the amount of creatinine produced is related to total skeletal muscle mass. Daily creatinine production is fairly constant except when there is massive injury to muscle. The kidneys excrete creatinine very efficiently and blood levels and daily urinary excretion of creatinine fluctuates very little in healthy normal people. Since blood and daily urine excretion of creatinine shows minimal fluctuation, creatinine excretion is useful in determining whether 24-hour urine specimens for other analytes (e.g., protein) have been completely and accurately collected.
A significant deviation from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
Includes:
Microalbumin, Random Urine with Creatinine
Patient Instructions:
Exercise within 24 hours, infection, fever, congestive heart failure, marked hyperglycemia, and marked hypertension may elevate urinary albumin excretion over baseline values.
Estimated turnaround for results is 4 business days.
If confirmation testing is required, the estimated time may be extended.

Description:
C-Peptide is useful in the evaluation of pancreatic beta cell function (e.g., helping distinguish type 1 from type 2 diabetes mellitus, or monitoring patients who have received islet cell or pancreatic transplants) and for determining the source of insulin in patients with hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia (e.g., distinguishing insulin-secreting tumors from exogenous insulin administration). It is also sometimes measured as an additional means (more resistant to hemolysis than is insulin itself) for evaluating glucose tolerance tests.
Significant deviations from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.

Adiponectin(1)

Description:
Adipocytes (fat cells) express a variety of proteins that function in the homeostatic control of glucose and lipid metabolism. Insulin regulates the translocation and secretion of many of these proteins in response to changes in energy balance. Adiponectin is a protein whose secretion from adipocytes is enhanced by insulin stimulation. It has been suggested that the development of non-insulin dependent (Type II) diabetes may involve dysregulation of adiponectin secretion. In support of the link between obesity and Type II diabetes, it has been shown that decreased expression of adiponectin correlates with insulin resistance, and that adiponectin appears to be a potent insulin enhancer linking adipose tissue and whole-body glucose metabolism.
• Individuals with low adiponectin levels have a 3X greater risk of developing metabolic syndrome [1]. • Men with two or more risk factors for metabolic syndrome and high adiponectin levels are half as likely to develop metabolic syndrome as men with low adiponectin levels [2]. • Individuals with low levels of adiponectin are up to 9X as likely to develop type 2 diabetes [3]. • Individuals with low adiponectin levels have a 2X increase in the prevalence of CAD [4]. • Adiponectin levels in the blood can be increased by thiazolidinediones, such as pioglitazone [5].

Description:
The lack of insulin causes the level of sugar in your blood to become abnormally high. When your body does not have enough insulin, it is hard for sugar to enter your cells. Sugar builds up in the blood. Too much sugar in your blood can cause many problems. These problems can be life-threatening if they are not treated. However, proper treatment can control your blood sugar level.
A significant deviation from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
